Believe it or not, lots of people really like garlic which is made into an amazing variety of foods and decorations. A lot of garlic is grown in southern Ontario. The soil and climate are favourable. Many varieties of hard and soft neck garlic flourish hereabout. There is a substantial community of garlic enthusiasts. People like growing garlic and turning it into every manner of tasty foods. Very healthy food, by the way.

Throughout the late summer and early fall as the year’s crop of matures Garlic Fairs are held in many communities across the province in celebration. Local growers showcase their produce and an astonishing variety of activities and garlic products are to be seen. On top of this, many growers welcome family visitors at their farms.

Garlic-braiding, cooking demonstrations, decorations, tasting, garlic spreads, dressings, garlic and oil, roasted garlic, garlic baskets, dried garlic slices, garlic baskets, fresh garlic scallions, garlic bulbils, cooking competitions, celebrity chefs and even a non-alcoholic shooter for a quick garlicky fix. Even garlic ice cream.

Summer in Ontario. What could be better than a weekend family outing? Get out of the urban core and explore the lush beauty of soil, greenery, small towns – in search of garlic.
