Digestive tracts can become irritated for several reasons. Irritation can lead to inflammation and other symptoms, including abdominal pain, heartburn, gas, bloating, irritable bowel syndrome, and more. Demulcents are traditionally used to treat digestive tract issues. Demulcents are herbs that are rich in mucilage and can soother and protect irritated or inflamed internal tissue. Demulcents are useful for treating diarrhea, constipation, and other inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract.
Demulcents are useful because they prevent microbe binding to cell membranes, binding excessive water, improving microcirculation, and acting as a direct physical barrier in the digestive tract. Some demulcents with clinical efficacy that are typically used to treat gastrointestinal issues include Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL), Althea officinalis (marshmallow root) and Ulmus rubra (slippery elm).
DGL is a form of licorice root that does not have glycyrrhizin. This allows for a soothing effect on the gastrointestinal lining. DGL has been researched for its effectiveness in treating symptoms associated with duodenal and gastric linings. DGL is also known to improve gastrointestinal mucosa. Some research suggests that DGL can also be beneficial in preventing damage to the digestive tract lining caused by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
For decades the following demulcents, DGL, Marshmallow root, and slippery elm has seen favor in treating a variety of gastrointestinal issues. These demulcents have effectively treated reflux esophagitis, gastritis, diarrhea, respiratory concerns, and even inflammatory skin lesions.
Cyto-Matrix GI-Soothe is formulated to treat gastrointestinal issues effectively. GI-Soothe is made with high-quality, effective demulcents that have mucoprotective effects on the digestive tract. The formula uses DGL, marshmallow root, and slippery elm. GI-Soothe comes with 60 vegetable capsules per bottle.
